A Doctor’s Journey - Brittany

By Haley Hester • Sep 20, 2022

“It was a safe haven for me,” Brittany said. “I'm just extremely grateful for everything that the staff at Angel’s House has done for me. Miss Becky and Mr. and Mrs. V were a rock for me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

GBCH&FM is delighted to celebrate another former resident of ours, Brittany Jankauskas, who graduated from the Mercer University School of Medicine in May! Brittany is graduating with her medical degree and will begin her residency in Miami, Florida to start her training as a pediatrician.

“In the beginning I just didn't think I was capable of going to medical school but I never give up on anything that I see as a challenge,” Brittany said. “I applied to 17 schools and got an interview at Mercer where I learned just a few weeks before the academic term I was accepted. I started med school in fall of 2018 and now I am graduating in spring 2022.”

Brittany’s constant desire and determination to conquer is what sets her apart from the rest. Growing up her childhood shaped her into the woman she is today that embodies both strength and courage.

“Throughout my childhood, I suffered both emotional and physical abuse from my mom and I never knew my dad,” Brittany explained. “In all honesty, I wish I had come to Angel’s House sooner than I did.”

Brittany ran away from home and stayed with a close friend to escape the abuse from her mother. After Brittany went to court to plead to be taken out of the care of her mother, she was then placed into foster care where she says she was welcomed with open arms and finally felt safe.

“It was a safe haven for me,” Brittany said. “I'm just extremely grateful for everything that the staff at Angel’s House has done for me. Miss Becky and Mr. and Mrs. V were a rock for me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

After graduating high school, Brittany moved in with a family in the local area where she rented a room from them to live in and took time to figure out her next steps for her future. She still remains close to this family today and considers them her family.

“They came to my medical school graduation and have always supported me in whatever way I need and love me unconditionally,” Brittany stated.

While juggling school, 12 hour shift rotations at the hospital, and studying; Brittany does manage to enjoy some other things in life. Brittany loves horseback riding, weight lifting, is an avid reader, and is also interested in either adopting or fostering children in the future.

“I feel like there's never a really convenient time in life to start a family but I've actually decided, and this is partially based on my experience with the group home, that I think I would be more interested in adopting than in having my own kids,” Brittany says.

Brittany has worked hard to earn her medical degree and is excited about entering pediatrics. She is ready to learn and grow where God has planted her.

While Brittany continues to accomplish her dreams, she is beginning a new chapter in Miami, Florida with her husband. Join us in prayer for Brittany as we pray that her move to Florida is smooth, that God continues to guide her in her work, and that she will be immensely blessed in all that she does.

“Our mission is to provide a nurturing, structured, and safe environment that fosters a sense of trustworthiness which is key in building rapport with our residents,” Sara explains. “I believe that children have a need to belong and if that need is not fulfilled in a positive way, they often resort to misbehavior. We understand the necessity of expressing God’s unconditional love to youth with challenging behaviors. Our goal is to accept them as they are, welcome them, and let change happen organically with time.”
